PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telescopic shaft capable of extending and retracting lightly, and capable of suppressing backlash. SOLUTION: A intermediate shaft 6 being the telescopic shaft is provided with an inner shaft 15 and a cylindrical outer shaft 16 connected such that they can mutually relatively move in an axial direction, and such that mutual torque transmission can be carried out. The outer circumference face 15b of the inner shaft 15 and the inner circumference face 16b of the outer shaft 16 include spline tooth formed areas 15c, 16c having multiple spline teeth 17, 18 carrying out mutual spline fitting. A circumferential groove 19 used as a thinning groove wherein the areas can be filled with grease is formed in an axial middle part of the spline tooth formed area 15c of the inner shaft 15. In a portion of the circumferential groove 19 in the spline tooth formed area 15c, a gap amount between the outer circumference face 15b and the inner circumference face 16b is relatively enlarged, and a shear force of the grease can be relatively reduced. In a portion excluding the circumferential groove 19 in the spline tooth formed area 15c, a gap amount is relatively reduced, and backlash can be prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
