Provided is a negative electrode carbon material capable of suppressing capacity degradation that accompanies repeated charge-discharge cycles, storage in the charged state, floating charging, and the like. A raw material charcoal composition for the negative electrode carbon material of a lithium ion secondary battery, the composition being raw coke obtained by the delayed coking of heavy oil, and the raw coke having a true specific gravity of 1.30 or greater, wherein the raw material charcoal composition is characterized in that the band half-width of the peak near 1600 cm-1 in Ar laser Raman spectroscopy is brought to 55-68 cm-1, and the peak intensity ratio near I1350 cm-1/I1600 cm-1 is brought to 0.97 or greater by carbonization. |
