PURPOSE:To obtain a new vinylphenyl compound useful as a polymerizable monomer especially for optical materials and for coating compound, ink adhesive, vulcanizing agent for rubber, photosensitive resin, cross-linking agent, etc. CONSTITUTION:A vinylphenyl compound of formula I ((k) and (n) are >=0 integer; (m) 1 or 2) such as 1,3-bis(4,4'-vinylbenzylthio)-2-propanol. The compound of formula I wherein m=1, for example, is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with epichlorohydrin in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The compound of formula I wherein m=2 is obtained by reacting the compound of formula II with epichlorohydrin in the presence of sodium hydroxide and reacting the reaction mixture with sodium sulfide. The compound of formula I provides a resin having a high refractive index, high Abbe's number, low specific gravity, excellent light resistance and hard coating properties free from an offensive smell during abrasion and molding. The resin is useful as a material for lenses. |
