The method involves monitoring an operating parameter of a glow plug and a glow controller, and generating malfunctions when the monitored operating parameter differs from a predefined normal value or normal condition of the operating parameter. The malfunctions are linked with a time parameter, and a malfunction message is stored together with the time parameter. Further malfunction messages are searched and are stored with the same time parameter in the vehicle. The malfunctions that are linked with the time parameter are merged.
