A sinker divider (1) for a circular knitting machine has a main piece, a nib (11) formed on a forward upper section of the main piece and a nib slot (12) between said section and nib. The upper half of this section is thinner than the remainder of the divider, i.e. two indentations (13) each with a rough L-shaped cross-section are formed on said upper half and extend along the divider's long axis. The indentations catch cotton dust (3) which gathers in layers on the nib and slot so that it falls away during the backwards and forwards movement of the sinker divider when it is forming loops of pile. The dust is removed from either the sinker divider's forward or rear end as it moves with higher speed.
