The invention relates to a safety system for an automatic transmission (2) which calculates a virtual reduction ratio when a driver shifts a selector lever (21) from a drive position (P1) to neutral (P2) and then from neutral back into a drive position (P4). The virtual reduction ratio (P4) is compared with the reduction ratio (i2) obtained from a shifting characteristic diagram (B2). If there is a deviation, the virtual reduction ratio is assigned to a diagram (B2), which comprises a linearly constant reduction ratio (i2) surrounded by a reduction range (B2). The electronic control device (5) selects the set reduction ratio whose (P3) reduction range (B2) contains the virtual reduction ratio.
