PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effect high-precise diagnosis of abnormality of a fuel feed system of an engine not only during stoickly operation but also during lean operation. SOLUTION: A target engine torque changeΔRTe is computed and meanwhile, from a signal from a crank angle sensor 2, the angular acceleration speed change of a crank shaft is determined and the actual generating changeΔtorque of an engine is estimated and computed. Further,Δtorque is compared withΔRTe. Provided|Δtorque-ΔRETe|> a diagnos reference value, it is detected that target engine torque is not achieved and it is diagnosed that abnormality occurs to an engine (a fuel feed system). Through this method, abnormality of an engine is diagnosed regardless of stoichy operation or lean operation. When it is diagnosed that abnormality occurs, transfer to lean operation sensitive to abnormality of a fuel system is prohibited.
