An alarm signal generating facility is incorporated into a portable item of equipment such as a pager, pocket calculator,etc. The unit has a keyboard and LCD display [4],solar cells,moicrophone [6] and loudspeaker membrane [9]. Built into the side of the unit is a microswitch [8] that is used to activate the alarm signal generator. This can output signals immediately or after a set delay. Various forms of acoustic and/or optical signals can be generated.
