The invention relates to a centrifuge comprising a separation system (15), one side of which is arranged in a self-supporting manner inside a housing on a rotating drive shaft. Said centrifuge operates at a high pressure inside the housing. One of the ends of the drive shaft (4) connected to the separation system thus exerts a high pressure force in an axial direction as a result of the above-mentioned high pressure. A compensating surface (24) is provided at a point separate from the end of the drive shaft which is connected to the separation system. A compensating pressure force is axially applied to the compensating surface in a direction opposite to that of the pressure force exerted on the end of the drive shaft which is connected to the separation system so that the high pressure force and the bearings (5, 6) of the drive shaft can be compensated.
