摘要 [Problem] To make it possible to display an achromatic white color when absorption axes of polarizing elements are arranged in parallel with each other and to display an achromatic black color when the absorption axes are arranged orthogonal to each other, while maintaining a high transmittance and a high contrast. [Solution] By varying the compounding ratio between iodine and an azo compound having a specific structure, the color hue of a polarizing element or a polarizing plate can be adjusted in such a manner that, with respect to an a* value and a b* value as prescribed in JIS Z 8729, the absolute values of the a* value and the b* value can fall within 1 when the transmittance is measured on the polarizing element alone or the polarizing plate alone, the absolute values of the a* value and the b* value can fall within 2 when the transmittance is measured on two of the base materials while setting the absorption axes of the base materials in parallel with each other, and the absolute values of the a* value and the b* value can fall within 2 when the transmittance is measured on two of the base materials while setting the absorption axes of the base materials orthogonal to each other.
