A method of recovering energy from a moving ground transportation vehicle, the method comprising: providing a stationary electromagnet; generating, by a moving magnet mounted on a vehicle moving relative to the stationary electromagnet, a first magnetic field; generating, by the moving magnet, an electric current and a second induced magnetic field in the stationary electromagnet as the vehicle passes the stationary electromagnet, the first magnetic field and the second induced magnetic field opposing one another, the second induced magnetic field having a direction perpendicular to a direction of travel of the vehicle; and converting the electric current into energy storable in an energy storage unit electrically coupled to the stationary electromagnet.
