PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set the level of an optimum offset signal by a method wherein, in a state that a laser output is constant, a test signal is recorded in a trial write region while the level of an offset signal to be added to a focus control signal is being changed stepwise and its recording state is detected. SOLUTION: In a prescribed adjusting operation, while the level of an offset signal to be added to a focus control signal by a control operation by an offset control circuit 15 is being changed stepwise, a test signal is first recorded in a trial write region which is formed on a disk D. Then, the reproducing operation of the test signal is performed, and its recording state is detected by a recording-state detection circuit 14. That is to say, the level of the offset signal in which a bestβvalue is ontained is selected from the detected signal at this time. The setting operation of the level of the offset signal to be added to the focus control signal by the offset control circuit 15 is performed. As a result, a state which is optimum for the disk D is set.
