An optical amplifier is used to amplify light with a first wavelength ( lambda 2) which is selectively amplified and a by-pass route for a second wavelength ( lambda 2), which is not amplified. When a rupture of the line is detected the second wavelength can be input to the line as a test wavelength sent between any number of ports on the transmission line.
