<p>PURPOSE: To facilitate the manufacture by reducing a part requiring strict manufacturing tolerance in an engine valve working device having a high lift cam and a low lift cam. CONSTITUTION: A cam shaft 18 has a high lift cam 26 located between two low lift cams 24 relative to a valve lifter 32, and the high left cam is located inside an envelope of the low lift cam. The valve lifter is provided with an outer tappet 36 which is elongated in the direction of the cam shaft and slidably mounted in a bore of a cam carrier 10. The outer tappet is brought into contact with the low lift cam of both lift cams to simultaneously actuate two valves 40. An elongated bore 50 extending in the transverse direction of the outer tappet stores an inner tappet to be brought into contact with the high lift cam. A hydraulically-operated locking mechanism 74 locks these tappets so as to put the tappets 36, 38 into motion together with each other for the high lift operation, and unlocks them for the low lift operation, to permit the idling motion of the inner tappet in the outer tappet.</p> |
