PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix liquid crystal display device having a good visual field angle characteristic and an excellent response characteristic and reliability without entailing an increase of special processes. SOLUTION: Pixel electrodes 2 are broadly formed via gate insulating films 14 on wire-shaped counter electrodes 1 by the pixel electrodes 2. Liquid crystals having a perpendicularly aligned positive dielectric constant are inclined in a direction varying by 180 deg. on both sides of the pixel electrodes 2 by the electric fields formed between the pixel electrodes 2 and the counter electrodes 1.
