Pipe coupling with twisting advancing collars and compressed elastomeric sealing rings

A pipe coupling 13 for coupling the ends of pipe sections 10 and 11 together end to end includes a barrel member 19 adapted to bridge and surround the ends of the pipe sections to be coupled. Coupling members 20 engage the ends of the barrel member 19, and elastomeric sealing rings 21 are forced by the coupling members into the ends of the barrel member 19 and expanded radially outwardly and inwardly into tight sealing engagement within the end of the barrel member and around the circumferences of the pipe sections. Tangentially extending bolts 22 couple the respective coupling members to the barrel member, and thread-like wedge elements 29, 30 on the inside of the coupling members, and on the outside of the barrel member interact to progressively force the coupling members along the barrel member as the bolts are tightened to force the sealing rings into tight sealing engagement with the inside of the barrel member and around the circumference of the pipe sections. A coupling which has a barrel member which forms part of one of the pipe sections to be joined and having one coupling member and sealing ring to couple the barrel member to the other pipe section is also disclosed.
