A description is given of a method and a device for detecting the photographically relevant surface characteristics of a flat base material by means of an electromechanical feeler device by means of which the surface of the flat base material which can be, e.g., photographic paper, with or without a plastic or other coating, is scanned under light pressure, the electrical signals obtained being filtered with the aid of a bandpass filter, which is transparent in the wavelength region of 1.8 - 4 mm, and subsequently processed. The feeler device comprises a firm support for the specimen and a vertically movable probe which presses against the specimen resting on the support, as well as a signal evaluation device with the bandpass filter.
