By using singly an amorphous conductive oxide such as amorphous IN-Zn-O oxide or amorphous ITO, or using a two- or three-layer body including an amorphous conductive oxide layer and a metal thin film layer, a transparent electrode which has tapered side faces and the uppermost layer of which is made of the amorphous conductive oxide is formed on a substrate. An organic single-layer or multilayer portion containing at least an organic luminescent material is formed on the transparent electrode. A counter electrode is provided on the organic single-layer or multilayer portion. When necessary, a flattening layer is provided adjacent to the side face of the transparent electrode for making gentle the steepness of the level difference between the transparent electrode and the surface of the substrate. An organic EL display panel is produced by using such an organic EL device.
