The photo-element (B4) array generates an electric signal from light energy, with each element containing a polygonal phototransistor (40). The geometric centers of vertically and horizontally adjacent transistors are equidistant. An amplifier is coupled to at least one transistor, to process the transistor signals and is located in intermediate spaces between adjacent transistors. Typically each photo-element comprises one phototransistor and one amplifier.
