<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a therapeutic treatment method for maintaining neural pathways in a mammal cell; and to provide a composition and a device. <P>SOLUTION: The therapeutic treatment method for maintaining the neural pathways includes enhancing survival of neurons at risk of dying, inducing cellular repair of neurons and the neural pathways, and maintaining their differentiated phenotype. In one embodiment, the invention provides means for stimulating CAM expression in the neurons. The invention also provides means for evaluating the status of nerve tissue, including means for detecting and monitoring neuropathies in a mammal.
