PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink residual quantity detection system for using, to an ink real end state, an ink cartridge pulled out from a cartridge setting part after reaching an ink near end state. SOLUTION: Information on whether or not it is the ink near end state is stored in flag regions 71 and 81 of IC memories 70 and 80 of the ink cartridges 7 and 8 set at the cartridge setting part 6 of an ink-jet printer 1. Ink remaining quantity information is stored in the residual quantity counters 72 and 82. In the case where the set ink cartridges 7 and 8 are in the ink near end state, an ink residual quantity is calculated at an ink residual quantity calculating circuit 56 by subtracting an ink consumption quantity calculated from the number of discharge times of ink liquid droplets from count values of the residual quantity counters 72 and 82, and an ink real end is detected at an ink real end detecting circuit 58.
