An apparatus and method for setting a guard band with respect to an asynchronous Base Station (BS) in a broadband wireless communication system are provided. The BS includes a controller for generating a control signal to set a guard band when a time offset occurs between BSs; a mapper for mapping and outputting transmit data to a band, excluding the guard band, of a unique band of the BS according to the control signal; and an operator for multicarrier-modulating data fed from the mapper.

1. A base station in a wireless communication system, comprising:
a transceiver; and a controller configured to: transmit, to a mobile station, a signal using a band in which a guard band is set, wherein a size of the guard band is pre-determined, detect a time offset value representing a time offset between a base station and another base station, adjust the size of the guard band based on table information indicating a relationship between the time offset value and a size of the guard band, adjust a length of a transmission period based on the adjusted size of the guard band and an amount of control information that is included in the signal, and transmit, to the mobile station, a signal using the band in which the guard band with the adjusted size is set during the transmission period.
