The data processing installation has a display screen (12) and an optical input unit which includes a transmitter (24), fastened to a part of the body of a user for sending out a signal (58). A number of sensor units (18) is arranged near the screen. A receiver (40) fitted into each sensor unit generates an electrical signal on an output terminal (52) when a transmitted signal is received. The transmitter is an optical device, sending out a light beam. Each optical receiver is equipped with a delay unit (64) producing a control signal when the output signal of the optical receiver lasts a certain time. Each delay unit has a unit (68) which produces, from the control signal, a sign recognisable by the data processing installation. USE/ADVANTAGE - Allows people with physical or speech handicaps, such as spastics, to communicate with PC.
