A memory device includes an on-die thermal sensor and enable logic to receive commands from a host. In use, the memory device receives an enable indication from a host to power on the thermal sensor. This indication is preferably one or more bits of a mode register set (MRS) command. After a delay period, the host issues a thermal data sense indication to trigger the thermal sensor to take a temperature reading. This indication is preferably a memory interconnect impedance calibration command so that temperature measurement occurs when there is almost no memory activity to interfere with the measurement. The delay period preferably provides sufficient time for the thermal sensor to stabilise and provide an accurate reading. The thermal data is passed to a storage element to be read by the host, and the thermal sensor is disabled. The method reduces the amount of power consumed by the thermal sensor. |
