Chlorine-contg. substances (A) present in industrial waste are decomposed harmlessly by charging the waste to a melt-refining furnace where it is melted and refined at <= 1100 deg C, with simultaneous thermal decomposition of (A). Opt. (A) is first sepd. from the waste, then this is supplied to the furnace, opt. together with sepd. (A). The same method can be used to destroy (A) in copying materials (opt. charged to the furnace together with other industrial waste).
