Provided is an internal combustion engine (20) mounted on a small vehicle capable of protecting a sensor (50) projectingly provided on a cylinder (22) from a flying stone or the like without requiringa special member and attachment work thereof. In the internal combustion engine (20) mounted on the small vehicle provided with a sensor (50) detecting an operation condition of the internal combustion engine (20) and arranged roughly horizontally, the sensor (50) is provided on a side of the cylinder (22) and a vehicle body component such as catalyzer apparatus (34) is provided below the sensor50 to protect the sensor.
