An ECB(Electrically Controlled Birefringence) mode liquid crystal display device is provided to improve transmittance, a contrast ratio, and a viewing angle by attaching polarizing plates, and lambda/4 or lambda/2 plates, and forming slow shafts of the lambda/4 or lambda/2 plates at a regular angle. A liquid crystal display device includes a color filter display panel(200), a thin film transistor display panel(100), and liquid crystal formed between the color filter display panel and the thin film transistor display panel. The color filter display panel includes a first substrate(210) including color filters(230), a first lambda/4 plate(23) formed on a top side of the first substrate and having a slow shaft, and a first polarizing plate(21) attached on a top side of the first lambda/4 plate and having an absorbing shaft. The slow shaft of the first lambda/4 plate has 0±10 degrees to a reference direction. The absorbing shaft of the first polarizing plate has 135±10 degrees to the reference direction. The thin film transistor display panel includes a second substrate(110) including thin film transistors, a second lambda/4 plate(13) formed on a lower side of the second substrate and having a slow shaft, and a second polarizing plate(11) attached on a lower side of the second lambda/4 plate and having an absorbing shaft. The slow shaft of the second lambda/4 plate has 90±10 degrees to a reference direction. The absorbing shaft of the second polarizing plate has 135±10 degrees to the reference direction.
