Environmental cleansing device operating by decomposing pollutants

A device (38) for destroying environmental pollutants comprises a radiation-emitting layer (40) covered by an external catalytic layer (42) which, as a result of intercepting the radiation, forms an active material capable of decomposing pollutants. There is optionally an intermediate layer (44) between the layers (40, 42), or these layers can be in direct contact, the catalytic layer (47) in this latter case containing a radioactive isotope. Also claimed is a further device, in which a vessel containing the pollutant has a layer of the catalytic material on its surface and a radiation emitting later is provided externally.
