A method for reducing body weight, body mass index (BMI), abdominal circumference, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, plasma trigycerides and/or glycemia in a subject comprising the steps of: obtaining a food product comprising flour and a single pharmacologically active ingredient consisting of 0.5 wt % to 6 wt % of Opuntia ficus-indica (Nopal) on the basis of the flour weight; and administering said food product to the subject, in the absence of dietary modification by said subject in a daily amount containing 2 to 6 g of Nopal; wherein body weight, BMI, abdominal circumference, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, plasma trigycerides and/or glycemia in said subject is reduced.
