PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection image display device for adjusting a focus better, and to provide a projection image display method. SOLUTION: The projection image display device comprises a polarization selective multi-layer film 4 reflecting or transmitting incident light, a means converting a polarization direction of light reflected on the polarization selective multi-layer film 4 and including a reflection mirror 5 reflecting light at the side of the polarization selective multi-layer film 4 and aλ/4 phase difference plate 6, a reflection liquid crystal element 7 reflected by the means including the reflection mirror 5 and theλ/4 phase difference plate 6, modulating light penetrating the polarization selective multi-layer film 4 and reflecting light at the side of the polarization selective multi-layer film 4, and a projection lens 10 reflected by the reflection liquid crystal element 7, projecting light reflected on the polarization selective multi-layer film 4 and arranged at the same side as the reflection liquid crystal element 7 on the datum of the polarization selective multi-layer film 4.
