PURPOSE:To directly obtain in high efficiency an aromatic hydroxyl compound such as phenol highly important as an industrial feedstock, from an aromatic compound like benzene and oxygen. CONSTITUTION:Using a catalyst, a combination of (A) a platinum group metal such as palladium or its compound and (B) another metal capable of bearing at least two kinds of valence or its compound, an aromatic compound is reacted with an oxidative substance like oxygen in the presence of an olefin, thus giving the objective aromatic hydroxyl compound such as phenol in high yield along with the other objective carbonyl compound such as aldehyde or ketone. Addition of an iron group metal, alkali metal or compound(s) thereof to the above catalyst will provide higher yield of the title compounds. |
