PURPOSE: A mobile communication system for handover between different kinds of mobile communication networks and a handover method using the mobile communication system are provided to use an SMS function when transmitting channel assign information to a dual-mode terminal without defining a new interface for a handover between a UMTS network and a CDMA 1x network, thereby easily providing a handover service. CONSTITUTION: A dual-mode terminal(100) has a handover function between a UMTS network(200) and a CDMA 1x network(400). The dual-mode terminal(100) comprises as follows. A WCDMA module(140) supplies software for performing UMTS mobile communication. A CDMA 1x module(150) supplies software for performing CDMA 1x mobile communication. A mode selector(130) operates one of the modules(140,150), depending on whether a network where the dual-mode terminal(100) is located is the UMTS network(200) or the CDMA 1x network(400). The UMTS network(200) supplies a service to the terminal(100) to perform communication when the terminal(100) is located in the UMTS network(200). The CDMA 1x network(400) supplies a service to the terminal(100) to perform communication when the terminal(100) is located in the CDMA 1x network(400).
