PURPOSE: To obtain a polyimide, having a structural unit derived from a specific tetracarboxylic dianhydride and a diamino compound, producible in a short time, having a high decomposition temperature, usable at a high temperature, excellent in adhesion and liquid crystal orienting properties and useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal element, etc. CONSTITUTION: This polyimide has a structural unit derived from (A) a tetracarboxylic dianhydride and (B) a diamino compound and the component (B) has a side chain of the formula (R is H, a 1-11C alkyl or an alkoxy; L is 0-11; M is 1-3) in the molecule. The length of the side chain is 15-20Åand the component (A) has a cross-linkable group which is O, S, carbonyl, sulfonyl, a 1-3C alkylene, bis(trifluoromethyl)silylene, 2-(1-trifluoromethyl)ethylene or methoxymethylene in the molecule. The protruding distance thereof is 3-5.5Å.
