PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for controlling the speed of a sewing machine for improving the cycle-time by reducing the total sewing period and achieving an excellent finish of sewing by preventing the sewing locus from slipping out of a required sewing line. SOLUTION: The quantity of change from the quantity of movement of the n-th stitch to the quantity of movement of the (n+1)th stitch in the X-axis direction and that in the Y-axis direction are found based on a sewing pattern, and the positive/negative directions of those quantities of change are also found, then the speeds in the X-axis direction and in the Y-axis direction are selected respectively according to the elements above (ST 3-ST 8). And after comparing the speeds, the smaller speed is determined as the speed of movement of the nth stitch (ST 9).
