The telematic terminal (1) connected to an ISDN network (2) at 64 kb/s is arranged to operate at a first full wanted information bit rate of 64 kb/s and at a second reduced wanted information bit rate of 56 kb/s. The terminal (1) is comprised of a module (11) for monitoring the wanted bit rate and emission means and reception means for HDLC type flags indicating communication start and which comprise a module (10) for analysis and recognition of non standardised HDLC flags, to control the module (11). The module (10) is comprised of a shift register (12) receiving the serial data received by the terminal, and a storage decoder (13). The invention applies to group G4 fax machines.
