A wear protection segment comprises a ductile baseplate (3,103) bearing a buffer layer (4,104), a hard facing layer (5,105) and one or more carbide-containing armor layers (6-8,106-109). A wear protection segment, for fastening to a machine element, has a ductile baseplate (3,103) supporting one or more carbide-containing highly alloyed armor layers, the novelty being that the overall dimensions 50 x 500 mm are not exceeded and the armor layers comprise (a) a buffer layer (4,104) of a self-hardening alloy of hard manganese steel type, an 18/8/6 alloy or an alloy of composition 29% Cr, 9% Ni, 0.2% C and balance Fe; (b) a built-up layer (5,105) of a hard facing or impact hardenable alloy of Brinell hardness 300-600 HB; and (c) one or more armor layers (6-8,106-109). An Independent claim is also included for a wear protected machine part with spaced apart wear protection segments as described above. Preferred Features: The buffer layer (4, 104) consists of an alloy of composition 0.8-1.4% C, 8-20% Mn, 0-3% Cr, 0-3% Ni, 0-3% Mo and balance Fe or 0.1% C, up to 6% Mn, 18% Cr, 8% Ni and balance Fe. The built-up layer (5, 105) consists of an alloy of composition 0.5% C, 3% Mn, 7% Cr, 1% Mo, 0.4% V and balance Fe or 1.8% C, 2% Mn, 7% Cr, 0.6% Mo, 5% Ti and balance Fe. All the layers are applied by weld deposition and, when several armor layers are used, their carbide content increases with increasing distance from the baseplate.
