PURPOSE:To produce a metal complex dye excellent in electrification properties, dispersibility, etc., and useful for toner for electrophotography by blending NH4<+> or an ammonium compound cation as a cation part >= in a specified ratio based on its equivalent amount. CONSTITUTION:This metal complex dye of formula I [m is 1 to 3; R1 to R6 are each H, a 1 to 30C alkyl, a 1 to 30C alkoxy, a 1 to 30C alkylsulfone, etc.; M is Fe, Cr or Co; X1 is NH4<+> or an ammonium compound cation of formula II (n1 is 1 to 3; R14 to R17 are each H, a 1 to 30C alkyl, a 7 to 30C aralkyl, etc.)] contains NH4<+> or an ammonium compound cation as a cation part in an amount of >=80 to 100% based on its equivalent amount. This metal complex dye is produced by using ammonia or an ammonium compound in an amount more than its equivalent amount, i.e., 1.1 to 10 times equivalent in an exchange reaction of the cation part of the metal complex dye.
