PURPOSE:To judge whether or not an assist air device for atomizing fuel functions normally. CONSTITUTION:A transient operation condition of an engine is detected (S1). An average value alphaAV of fluctuation of air-fuel ratio feedback correction factors within a specified time after transient judgment (S2, S8) is obtained as a value indicating air-fuel ratio fluctuation width in the transient operation (S3 and S4, S9 and S10). When assist air is actually supplied, atomization angoe of fuel is enlarged for increasing a flow rate along a wall, accordingly the air-fuel ratio fluctuation width is increased in the transient operation. It is judged whether or not the average value alphaAV corresponds to the characteristic (S5 to S7, S11 to S13). Based on the judgment result, failure occurrence is judged in respect to the assist air device. |
