Programme-controlled washing machine with a laundry drum which can be driven by a motor in the washing and spinning mode and which is located inside a tub, out of which the washing and rinsing lye can be discharged by means of an emptying pump arranged in a flow-off conduit, and with electronics which control the laundry-drum drive motor and by means of which the rotational speed of the laundry drum in the spinning mode is increased in small steps or stages and, when foam forms in the tub, is reduced correspondingly. For the purpose of recognising the risk of the formation of foam during the spinning operation, each spinning-speed increase step or each spinning-speed increase phase is concluded with a spinning-speed measurement or a load-moment measurement. The particular actual spinning speed measured thereby is compared with a predetermined desired spinning speed or the measured load moment is compared with a predetermined load-moment value. On the basis of a recorded or detected speed difference or an ascertained load-moment change, the next predetermined desired spinning speed is reduced. After the reduced spinning speed has been reached, only then is an increased desired spinning speed predetermined again.
