MIXTURES OF 1,3-DIOL-BASED ESTERS, PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF 1,3-DIOL-BASED ESTERS AND THE USE THEREOF

The invention relates to an ester composition which comprises an ester formed by 2,2-dimethyl- or 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol, respectively, and an aliphatic carboxylic acid. According to the invention the composition contains 0.1-40 wt.% of a diester of 1,3-propanediol and 60-99.9 wt.% of a monoester of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol. The invention also relates to a process for preparing carboxylic acid esters of 1,3-diols. According to the process, a 1,3-diol is reacted with an esterification agent in the presence of a catalyst which is formed by an acid ion exchange resin. The ester compositions and the monoesters, diesters or mixtures of mono/diesters of 1,3-diols provided by the invention can be used in particular as film-forming agents of water-soluble paint compositions.
