PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that transition (initialization) from splay alignment to bend alignment is not satisfactorily performed by generating potential difference in only a thickness direction of a liquid crystal. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device is provided with a first substrate having a plurality of pixel electrodes 23 disposed in a matrix shape, a second substrate having a counter electrode and a liquid crystal layer packed between the first and the second substrates and comprising an OCB mode liquid crystal. A driving method of the liquid crystal display device has a step for applying a transverse electric field to the liquid crystal layer for initialization and a step for applying an electric field in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer between the pixel electrodes and the counter electrode.
