This invention is directed generally to a process for producing Zeranol that eliminates high pressure and high temperature hydrogenations and provides high selectivity for Zeranol at improved yields. Zeranol can be prepared by the general process comprising reducing the ketone function of a compound of Formula VI: (see formula VI) in the presence of a reducing agent of general Formula Al(OR3)3; to obtain a compound of Formula V: (see formula V) wherein R1, R2 and R3 are defined herein.
