This invention pertains to the identification of genes whose expression levels are altered by chronic exposure of a cell, tissue, or organism to one or more drugs of abuse (e.g. alcohol, stimulants, opiates, etc.). In one embodiment, this invention provides a method of monitoring the response of a cell to a drug of abuse. The method involves contacting the cell with the drug of abuse; providing a biological sample comprising the cell; and detecting, in the sample, the expression of one or more genes or ESTs identified herein, where a difference between the expression of one or more of said genes of ESTs in said sample and one or more of said genes or ESTs in a biological sample not contacted with said drug of abuse indicates a response of the cell to the drug of abuse.
