PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic wave generator capable of obtaining a high terahertz output even with normal (unamplified) femtosecond laser light. SOLUTION: The electromagnetic wave generator for generating electromagnetic waves based on irradiated light includes a semiconductor substrate, a first approximately belt-like electrode provided on the substrate, and a second belt-like electrode parallel to the first electrode on the substrate. The first electrode has a sharp edge protrusion protruding toward the second electrode, and the sharp edge has an acute angle smaller than 90°. In addition, the generator includes an optical element for forming a plurality of condensing spots in a plurality of regions including the tip of the sharp edge protrusion.
