A butyl adhesive comprising maleic anhydride optionally with nanoclay is provided to improve adhesion between rubber and the surface of a substrate, particularly in tire steel belts, window vibration damping materials, and sails of sailing boats. A butyl adhesive comprises maleic anhydride-grated butyl rubber produced by the method comprising the steps of: (a) providing a solution of brominated butyl rubber in a nonpolar hydrocarbon solvent; (b) adding at least 1 phr of maleic acid anhydride, antioxidant and a catalyst represented by the following formula 1 to the solution; and (c) carrying out a reaction in the solution at a temperature of 120 deg.C or lower under a pressure of at least 100 psi to form maleic anhydride-grafted butyl rubber. In formula 1, M is a divalent metal; R1 is a C2-C20 alkyl hydrocarbon; and R2 is a C2-C20 alkyl hydrocarbon. |
