PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of uniformly performing controlled cooling of a steel bar throughout its length immediately after hot rolling and a method of applying various heat treatments. SOLUTION: The steel bars are placed in parallel with each other, and are made to pass through a cooling zone while being rotated on its axis and being advanced on the skew side by side. The cooling zone is constituted by placing many unit fluidized beds in parallel with each other which are used for simultaneously cooling the entire length of the steel bar under the same conditions. Each unit has three cooling performance capabilities which are (A) a room-temperature fluidized bed having strong cooling performance, (B) air cooling, and (C) heat-retention. The tree conditions above are set for each of the parallel-placed units as needed, and the timing of cooling and the strength of cooling are flexibly adjusted.
