PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound excellent in photochemically long term stability and polarization, having a sufficient tilting angle after exposure to light and capable of forming a highly fractionated and stable orientation pattern. SOLUTION: The objective compound is a silane of the formula [X<1> -X<3> are each an alkyl, an alkoxy, a halogen, etc.; S<1> is a spacer unit, etc.; A-ring is phenylene, etc.; B-ring is phenylene; K is H, F, Cl, cyano, etc.; Y<1> and Y<2> are each single covalent bond, etc.; (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1; C-ring is phenylene, etc.; Z is O, etc.], e.g. (E)-3,4-dimethoxy cinnamic acid-6-(3 triethoxysilanylpropylcarbamoyloxy)hexyl ester.
