PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong the life of a photoreceptor or the like so as to prolong the exchange cycle of the photoreceptor or the like by a method by which optimum voltage and frequency are easily known by solving a following problem: the exchange cycle of the photoreceptor or the like is shortened because the oxidation deterioration of the photoreceptor or the like is severe if applied AC voltage or frequency is high, and an abnormal image is formed because electrification potential of the photoreceptor is not uniform if the applied AC voltage or the frequency is low when the photoreceptor is electrified by providing a gap between the photoreceptor and an electrifying roller. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus having a system where the photoreceptor 1 and the electrifying roller 13 rotate each other, while their surfaces are opposed to separate by a predetermined gap G, and voltage obtained by superposing an alternating current having predetermined frequency and predetermined voltage on predetermined DC voltage is applied between both of them; similar voltage is applied in such a state that the rotation of both of them is stopped, and parameters of voltage and frequency or the like are set so that the area ratio between the width of two discharge marks formed on the surface of the photoreceptor and an island-shaped discharge mark formed in a gap between them may be a predetermined value.
