PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data communication apparatus for performing RZ modulation or RZI modulation in a simple circuit configuration to NRZ data input to output RZ modulated signals or RZI modulated signals. SOLUTION: In the data communication apparatus 10 to input serial data and signals indicating the break of data in synchronism therewith to output the RZ or RZI modulated signals corresponding to a specified communication speed, a counter 11 is reset by the input of data enable signals, the polarity of the serial data at the point of time at which the counter reaches a start decoding value corresponding to the communication speed is output to RZ data as it is in RZ modulation setting, and the polarity of the serial data is inverted and output to RZI data when the counter reaches the start decoding value corresponding to the communication speed in RZI modulation setting. In either case, when the counter reaches an end decoding value corresponding to the communication speed, the RZ data are unconditionally turned to "0". COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
