<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a yellow coloring matter that has a hue with high clarity suitable for ink-jet recording, various fastnesses of recording product and excellent storage stability of an ink composition in the preparation of the ink composition and an ink composition containing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The water-soluble azo compound is represented by formula (1) (A is a hydroxy group, a morpholino group, an amino group, an aliphatic amine residue which may contain a substituent group or an aromatic amine residue which may contain a substituent group; R<SB>1</SB>is a hydrogen atom or a 1-4C alkyl group; R<SB>2</SB>is a hydrogen atom, a nitro group or a hydroxy group; n is an integer of 1-3) as a free acid.
